Fly Fishing Owen River Lodge

Murchison Day Walks

​Murchison is the gateway to the southern entrance to Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second biggest park at 452,002 ha. The multitude of rivers in the area makes Murchison a white water playground and an angler’s paradise.
Walks in the area range from 20 minutes to several days in duration.

Murchison Golf Course

A pretty, relaxed 9 hole golf course next to the Buller River. Only 2 Km north of Murchison on the Kawatiri Murchison Highway, keep an eye out for the sign.

Murchison Museum

A Family friendly, interesting look into this small towns interesting past.
The main focus is on the effects of the 1929 Murchison Earthquake. There are photographs and written accounts of the devastation at the district and the experiences of the local people of the time.

Natural Flames

A unique set of circumstances occur here to make it the only place we know of where flames are burning on the floor of a forest – without burning the trees down! There are a couple of places in the world where flames come out of the ground, but usually in an area of bare rock.

We are a small, friendly, kayaker-oriented operation based in the South Island of New Zealand, one of the world's premier white water river running areas. We run residential white-water kayak courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced boaters. an experienced boater looking for help in planning your New Zealand paddling trip, we can also provide information, kayak and gear rental , and professional guides if necessary - we can organize the total package for you.

Old Ghost Road

​Murchison is the closest hub to the Lyell end of the Old Ghost Road and the perfect start or end point to your trek or cycle. The Old Ghost Road is a long-forgotten gold miners’ road that is being revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north.

Swimming - The Eel Hole

​Don’t let the name put you off, it is just a nick name, or is it.
This majestic swimming hole has both shallow and deep areas with a rope to swing into the cool buller river and large boulders that you can leap from.

Yoga

Hatha yoga classes which include stretching, breathing, relaxation, meditation, and dynamic/flowing movement. Weekly classes are held in a beautiful, spacious room at the Murchison Recreation Centre.  This is tranquil setting with a friendly and welcoming group of students, and visitors to Murchison are most welcome to attend. Please bring a mat, blanket, and cushion to class (a few spare ones are available).
