The Front Room 28 Grey Street, Murchison Ph: 03 5239127
The Space Murchison is a little mountain village at the western end of the Four Rivers Plain, on the way to "everywhere..." (an hour and a half from Nelson or the West Coast, three and a half hours from Christchurch). There are eight rivers weaving through this valley among the mountains. It's one of the gateways to Kahurangi National Park. It's also the whitewater capital of New Zealand - with kayaking, whitewater rafting, bush tramps, gold-fossicking and, arguably, some of the best brown trout fishing the country has to offer...
Guest Access The apartment has its own entrance, key and porch - only the carpark is shared. No pets are permitted in the apartment, nor off the lead on the property at any time. Pets may overnight on the porch if caged or tied - there is ample shelter.
Interaction with Guests We like our guests to feel private in their own space - but we're available for conversation at most times. Our space is LGBTI-friendly.
The Neighbourhood The Front Room is walking distance to all of Murchison, and looks out on paddocks, trees and the river. This little settlement is surrounded by mountains and, sometimes, mist which loops the bush-covered hills like a river ghost. In winter, we have frosts and snow - in summer, the temperature can soar above 35 under a bright, cloudless sky. Murchison (permanent pop. 490-ish) has cafes, a museum, a kayak school, a butcher with the best bacon in the South Island, a swing bridge (just down the road) and there's gold in them thar rivers...!
Getting Around Public transport is bus, to and from Murchison. Pubs, cafes, general store all in easy walking distance. Other Things to Note There are great hikes and bikes to enjoy, when you're not falling down rivers!
House Rules The Front Room is a non-smoking apartment - however smoking is OK on the porch. Being on the edge of the village, ours is a lovely, quiet place - so loud parties till after midnight aren't favourites....
